Growing skateboarding in Newham, one space at a time

Skate Newham is a not-for-profit collective of volunteers aiming to promote the building of skateparks and skateboarding-friendly spaces in the London Borough of Newham.
Our vision is to grow the cultural potential of our creative community by connecting skateboarders across the borough. We’re also here to assist community groups with skate facility building projects, and to promote learning.
We collaborate with local government departments, and aim to raise on-going project funding via crowd-funding and grants. We’d love more people to join our ambition: If that’s you, email: skatenewham@gmail.com
About Skate Newham
Skate Newham was originally borne out of the Rainbow Community Garden project in Brampton Park in East Ham after it secured funding from Newham Council’s People Power Places project to build a mini ramp. This first skate space opened in August 2024 with plans to further develop the site over time. Our vision now is to create skateable spaces across the borough.
Until recently, skateboard culture in Newham was fractured, with skaters travelling to skateparks in other boroughs; many young people had no access at all. Things started to change when University College London built City Mill Skate as part of its Pool Street Campus in 2022.
Skate Newham now has a vision to bring all potential skatepark users, and the wider community, into a conversation about how skate spaces can evolve within the borough. We are collaborating with LBN departments and Newham Mayor, who are all extremely positive, supportive and deeply knowledgeable about the societal benefits of skateboarding.
Our first task has been to examine Newham’s population needs and assess spaces that might be appropriate for skate facilities. We’re open to conversations between local skate groups, wider community, LBN departments and to gain expert advice from skateboarding organisations, and individual experts.
